Rebele Family ShelterSince the Rebele Family Shelter opened its doors in the spring of 2005, the four bedrooms supported by our church have welcomed and protected many mothers and their children. The children have been newborn to age 15. When a mother and newborn come into the shelter, it is directly from the hospital. This has got to be a very scary time for a new mother! An even scarier time for a mother would be having a child and no home, no safety. Our church helps to support these women and children on their way to a better, safer future. I.S.S.PThe Interfaith Satellite Shelter Program keeps homeless women and children off the streets, feeds them a warm evening meal and light breakfast. Guests spend Wednesday nights at UMC Santa Cruz's California Street location. The Interfaith Satellite Shelter Program provides more beds in churches for the homeless than all government-run programs in the Bay Area. To read about its philosophy and a history of homeless programs in Santa Cruz, see the book The Quality of Mercy. Visit the Homeless Services Center in Santa Cruz webite for more information. |

MHCANThe Mental Health Client Action Network is a grass roots educational, advocacy, and support organization for adults with serious mental illness. Incorporated as a non profit in 1995, the organization has been renting space from UMC Santa Cruz since 1993. MHCAN is open as a drop-in center four days a week from 9 to 3 p.m. In addition MHCAN distributes food from Second Harvest Food Bank, provides a 12-station computer lab for those returning to college, and trains peer counselors every summer. Two special projects this year have been encouraging mental health clients with Medicaid (MediCal) to get a full physical health exam and exploring the development of new, affordable, permanent housing with peer supports for those with mental illness. MHCAN is located at 1051 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz 95062. For more information see the MHCAN website |
